Notes for Charles Herbert Frederick HAMMERTON
Apparently Fred was his Mother's favorite child, he was named after Ada's brother Charles Herbert who was killed in WW1, so perhaps this was the reason.
Known as Fred as a boy and Charlie as an adult. When Charlie left school he was apprenticed to a local Butchers, but at the age of 17 he ran away to join the Royal Navy where he lied about his age. He served in WW2 and was demobed in 1946. He then worked for Aquila Airways laying out the flare paths for the flying boats, after that a job with BP refueling them. When the flying boats went out of commission he was offered the job of Oil Plant Supervisor with BP, where he worked until his retirement.
He was a very strong swimmer when he was a young man and his brothers remember him swimming over Southampton Water and swimming back with wood from the other side.
He played the piano, by ear and was a good artist, although he didn't keep these up after his youth.18
